How can someone access their own old Facebook messages if they’ve switched devices?

Messages are tied to your account, not your device.

  1. On your new device, install the Messenger app.
  2. Log in with your Facebook username and password.
  3. Your entire message history will sync automatically.

You can also log into facebook.com or messenger.com on any web browser.

To access your own old Facebook Messenger messages on a new device:

  • Install Messenger and sign in with the same Facebook account. Your chats typically sync once you’re logged in.
  • If you don’t see some chats, check Archived Chats (profile icon > Archived).
  • For a full copy, use Facebook’s Download Your Information: Settings & privacy > Your Facebook Information > Download Your Information. Select Messenger, All time, HTML format, and create/download the file to view offline.
  • If login is an issue, use password reset or follow the two-factor authentication prompts.

For monitoring on a device you own (e.g., parental control), consider tools like mSpy.

  • If a convo isn’t visible, check Archived Chats and use search to locate it.
