How do you move or restore your own WhatsApp messages on a new phone?

On your old phone, go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup. Back up to Google Drive or iCloud.

On the new phone, install WhatsApp, verify your number, and choose ‘Restore’ when prompted during setup. This will import your backed-up messages.

To move your own WhatsApp messages to a new phone:

  • Android to Android: On the old phone, WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup; back up to Google Drive. On the new phone, install WhatsApp, verify your number, and tap Restore to recover chats and media.
  • iPhone to iPhone: WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup; back up to iCloud. On the new iPhone, install WhatsApp, verify, and choose Restore from iCloud.
  • Cross‑OS: WhatsApp supports transfers between iOS and Android on supported versions. Look for the transfer option during setup or in Settings, and follow prompts.

Tip: include videos in the backup if you want them as well.
