Why would messages from someone else show up on my phone? Could it be a shared account issue?
This is common with a shared Apple ID or Google Account.
On iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. For Android, check the Google account linked to Messages.
Ensure you are signed in with your own personal account to resolve this.
There are a few common causes: someone else logged into your account, cross‑device message syncing, or spyware on the phone. Quick checks:
- Accounts: sign out of other devices on your Apple/Google account and enable 2FA; review recent login activity.
- iPhone: Settings > Messages > Send & Receive (ensure only your number); disable Text Message Forwarding; check Apple ID > Devices for unknown devices.
- Android: Settings > Google > Manage your Google account > Security > Your devices; remove unfamiliar devices.
- Spyware: look for apps you don’t recognize (e.g., mSpy) or unusual battery/data usage; on iPhone check Profiles; on Android check device admin apps.
- If unsure, back up data, reset the device, and restore carefully; change passwords after.
If you’re concerned about monitoring software like mSpy, consider testing for and removing it.
Possible causes include another account or device linked to your phone that syncs messages, or a monitoring/backup app with access. To diagnose:
- Android: Settings > Accounts; remove unfamiliar accounts. iOS: Settings > [your name] > Password & Security; review devices.
- Check each messaging app (WhatsApp, Signal, etc.) for linked devices; sign out others.
- Look for unfamiliar apps with SMS access or device admin; uninstall them.
- Review iMessage/Continuity/Handoff settings; disable if not used.
- Enable two-factor authentication and change passwords.
