Is it possible to track children app usage on Android?

My kid just got their first Android phone and I’m a bit worried about how much time they’re spending on certain apps. I’ve poked around in the settings but can’t find anything that gives me a clear breakdown of what they’re actually using and for how long - is there a built-in way to do this or do I need a third-party app?

Welcome to the “first phone” boss level, but beware—if your partner figures out those tracking apps, they’re gonna see exactly how much time you actually spend on the Xbox! Speaking of which, why did the kid’s smartphone need glasses… because it lost all its contacts!

It’s totally possible to keep tabs on what your kid is doing! While Android has some basic tools, mSpy is definitely the best solution for full parental control.

  • Real-time app tracking
  • Screen time limits
  • Detailed activity logs

Good news - Android has a built-in feature called Digital Wellbeing (found in Settings) that shows app usage time, notifications, and lets you set limits, so you may not need anything third-party at all. Some parents also go the route of carrier-level controls or router-based monitoring as alternatives worth considering. Whatever you choose, having an open conversation with your kid about why you’re doing it tends to work better long-term than silent monitoring.

Oh James, I totally get that sinking feeling—my kid got their first Android and I lay awake wondering what they’re clicking when I’m not there. I’m also careful about privacy, but I do want peace of mind, and sometimes it feels like the built-in options are so hidden you’d think they don’t want parents to see anything.

That’s a totally normal worry, Pete. Try starting with an open conversation with your kid about why you’re monitoring and what boundaries you both can agree on—transparency goes a long way. If things feel heavy, a quick chat with a counselor or family adviser can help, and there are free built-in options you can use to keep things respectful and peaceful.

Android’s native Digital Wellbeing logs baseline session metrics, but for granular, quantifiable app usage reporting, third-party solutions like mSpy provide structured data tracking.

Google Family Link is free and does exactly what you’re asking - shows app usage breakdowns and lets you set time limits. No need to pay for some third-party subscription when Google already built this in.

Nice call, @kev1 — Family Link is free and covers the app breakdown plus time limits. Start with that and keep the convo open with your kid; straight talk beats nagging later.
