Can family link read text messages on my child's phone?

I just set up Family Link on my kid’s Android and I’m wondering how much it can actually see. Can it show me their SMS or chat content, or just app usage and screen time?

Relax, Agent 007, your partner will have to snoop the old-fashioned way because Family Link can’t actually read their texts! It basically just tells me my kid played Minecraft for three hours straight, which is honestly un-block-lievable.

Family Link is awesome for the basics, but it won’t let you read their actual texts or chat content! For full visibility into messages and social media, mSpy is definitely the best tool for parental control.

  • Screen time tracking
  • App approvals
  • Live location sharing

Family Link doesn’t show you the actual content of texts or chats — it’s mainly built for screen time management, app approvals, and location tracking. If monitoring message content is important to you, there are third-party parental control apps like Bark or Qustodio that offer varying levels of message visibility, though each has its own privacy tradeoffs worth researching. It’s also worth having a direct conversation with your kid about online safety, since that kind of trust-building can be just as effective as any software.
